Hi Families and Friends of KHES,
In addition to serving as the school's Reading Specialist, I am also the elementary test coordinator. Today's update comes at you with a focus on testing at KHES.
If you were part of the KHES community last year, you probably remember the quarterly NWEA. This year, KHES will not be utilizing NWEA. Instead, we will be using two online assessment tools called SRI and SMI. If you have not already received it, you should be getting a letter sent home that explains more about the actual tests themselves.
SRI stands for Scholastic Reading Inventory, and, similarly, SMI stands for Scholastic Math Inventory. These two assessments are short online assessments. All students K-5 will complete the SRI, while the SMI is appropriate only for students in grades 2 and up.
I know some of you are probably thinking to yourselves, "Testing? Really? In elementary school? Why?" I would like to reassure you that these tests are relatively short (most students complete each one in 25 minutes) and purposeful. By completing these assessments, students will provide their teachers with current data regarding their mastery of skills and standards right now. This allows teachers to plan instruction that meets the individual needs of each child!
